Students set up food bank

As part of their work towards the Achieve Programme with The King’s Trust, Post 16 students at Crosshill Special School have explored different ways in which they can help others. As a class they have then voted how they would like to do this.

They have decided that a food bank is a good idea as there are lots of people currently struggling with rising food costs. Working in partnership with Benefit Mankind, the UK based aid relief charity, the students will be collecting food and then packing food parcels to distribute to those in need.

Students are now asking for your help by donating non-perishable food items, including:

-Dried foods such as pasta, rice and noodles
-Tinned food such as beans, soup, tuna, tinned veg
-Snacks such as cereal bars, crisps, biscuits
-Drinks such as cordial, tea, coffee, long life milk
-Jars such as pasta sauce, jam
-Personal cleaning products such as toilet rolls, toothpaste, shower gel

Any donations can be dropped at school on weekdays between Monday 24 February and Friday 7 March, 9am-2pm. The address is Crosshill Post 16 School, 7 Cunningham Court, Lions Drive, Blackburn, BB1 2QX. Alternatively, the students will be at Audley Sports and Community Centre on Chester Street in Blackburn on Friday 28 February and Friday 7 March from 10-12pm.

Mrs Kelly Smith, Post 16 teacher at Crosshill Special School, said: “The students have relished planning and organising this project and have been busy this week delivering hundreds of leaflets in the local area to urge people to donate.

“Whether it is one or 10 items, we will be so thankful for any donations. The students are excited to be able to get packing food parcels to help people in their local community.”
